Multi-Cloud Engineering Meetup — The first half of 2017 in review

The 2nd quarter of 2017 is over and now it’s time to summarize the Multi-Cloud Engineering Meetup group for the first half of the year.

We kicked out the 2017 with ‘Deploying Stateful Applications and Multi-Cluster Federation with K8s 1.5’ meetup to discuss the StatefulSet and PodDisruptionBudget moving to beta, providing an easier way to deploy and scale stateful applications, and make it possible to perform cluster operations like node upgrade without violating application disruption SLOs.

At February 2017, we invited you to have a sneak peek into Google Cloud Spanner and have a first guided look into this exciting technology.

Cloud Spanner is the first and only relational database service that is both strongly consistent and horizontally scalable. With Cloud Spanner you enjoy all the traditional benefits of a relational database: ACID transactions, relational schemas (and schema changes without downtime), SQL queries, high performance, and high availability. But unlike any other relational database service, Cloud Spanner scales horizontally, to hundreds or thousands of servers, so it can handle the highest of transactional workloads.

March was a very busy month with two meetups — AWS Cyber Security Best Practices and Recapping Google Next 2017.

During the “AWS Cyber Security Best Practices” meetup, we’ve shared our experience with implementing security best practices, to be implemented directly by development teams to build more robust and secure cloud environments.

On the heels of Google Next 2017 which took place in San Francisco, recapped all the major announcements, products, new features while demoing some of them.

During April, we partnered with CoolaData to review their business intelligence & behavioral analytics platform which helps companies to capture, analyze, & visualize events. As CoolaData customer, you can stream your internal data such as mobile and web event data and join it with external data points, such as Adword marketing campaigns, Facebook Ads, your CRM, offline sources or customer historical data from external databases as well as unifying all your data across different data sources to better understand customer behavior and the story they are telling you.

May 2017 was so far the busiest month with four (!!!) meetups, — ‘Google App Engine Flexible Environment’, ‘Cloud Security for Startups — From A to E(xit)’ and ‘BigData ETL Processing 50TB/day with Google Dataproc, Pub/Sub & Cloud Functions’ and finally the ‘The Master of Clusters’.

During the ‘Google App Engine Flexible Environment’, we have discussed how it can be hard to choose between PaaS and IaaS and how Google App Engine Flexible Environment helps to fill the gap.

Joshua Fox from Freightos described his experience developing with Flex Env, from beta and through its GA release in March. I’ll compare ideal use cases for Flex Env to those where Standard Env, GKE (Docker), or GCE is more suitable.

The ‘Cloud Security for Startups — From A to E(xit)’ was all about how founding a startup is a hard work. The daily roller coaster can exhaust you fast. And on top of that, you need to cope with information security challenges, compliance and tough questions from customers.

This event was a digest of a paper created by the Israeli Chapter of the CSA to help Software-as-a-Service startups (SaaS-SUs) gain and maintain client trust, by building solid security foundations.

One more meetup for May 2017 was the ‘BigData ETL Processing 50TB/day with Google Dataproc, Pub/Sub & Cloud Functions’.

During this talk, Shimon Tolts presented how he built an ETL at ironSource to process 50 Terabytes of daily data stored on Google Storage using Google DataProc (Google’s managed Apache Spark, PySpark and SparkSQL) on top of preemptible instances. Also, with services such as Pub/Sub and Cloud Functions synchronizing the jobs that result in loading the processed data into BigQuery for analytics.

The last meetup for May 2017 was ‘The Master of Clusters’ during which we hosted our friends from Big Things to discuss Architecture Patterns for Multi-Cluster Apache Kafka deployments as well as MongoDB Multi-Master Architecture

Finally, the July featured the ‘Google Cloud for AWS Professionals’ meetup during which we hosted a discussion on Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services to bring light to similarities and differences between platforms.

With a total of 10 meetups we donated to the local cloud community during the first 6 months, we feel the Multi-Cloud Engineering gaining momentum. If you have an interesting idea of what you’d like to discuss, please send me an email with short abstract of the talk to [email protected]
